The Samoa cricket team represents Samoa in international cricket. They became an affiliate member of the International Cricket Council (ICC) in 2000 and an associate member in 2017. They have participated in various tournaments and played against a number of international cricket teams.

History of Samoa Cricket Team

The Samoa cricket team began its journey in international cricket when they became an affiliate member of the ICC in 2000. They participated in the Pacifica Championship in 2001 and 2002, securing 6th and 5th positions respectively. In February 1966, cricket was restricted to being played only on Wednesdays and Saturdays by the Prime Minister, citing it as a distraction from cyclone cleanup efforts. A tragic incident occurred in October 1977 when a cricket match in Samoa ended in a fight, resulting in the death of two players. Since 2018, all Twenty20 matches played by the Samoa cricket team have been recognized as full T20Is.

James Baker, born on 16 February 1988 in Tokoroa, New Zealand, is a cricketer who plays for the Northern Districts. He also captains the Samoa cricket team. In the 2017–18 Plunket Shield season, he was the leading wicket-taker for Northern Districts, securing 34 dismissals in ten matches. In June 2019, Baker was chosen to represent the Samoa cricket team in the men’s tournament at the 2019 Pacific Games. He made his Twenty20 International (T20I) debut for Samoa against the Papua New Guinea cricket team on 8 July 2019. During the tournament, Samoa’s victory against New Caledonia in the bronze medal match earned Baker a bronze medal.

One of the memorable games for Samoa was their first-ever T20I match with Twenty20 International status against Papua New Guinea during the 2019 Pacific Games. In this, the Samoa cricket team managed to take 83/5 in 15 overs before the opposition took to the crease early due to bad weather. However, the poor conditions persisted, with the Papua New Guinea team taking 29/1 before winning due to the DLS method.
