London Spirit Team Guide

The London Spirit are a franchised men and womens team that play in The Hundred cricket competition in England.

London Spirit Background

The London Spirit cricket team was founded in 2019 when the new eight team Hundred competition was announced by the ECB. The team is a collaboration of historic English county sides Middlesex, Essex and Northamptonshire. The late, great Australia cricket team star Shane Warne was announced as the first coach of the men’s team before the first player draft for the competition in October 2019. Another Australian Lisa Keightley would coach the women’s London Spirit team. The captains were to be England white ball leader Eoin Morgan and the skipper of the England women’s team Heather Knight.

Where Do London Spirit Play?

The London Spirit play at arguably the World’s most famous cricket venue, Lords. The North London venue is known worldwide as ‘The home of cricket’.

London Spirit Players

England cricket team stars Zak Crawley, Mark Wood, Olly Stone and Ravi Bopara have all turned out for the London Spirit mens team, from an overseas point of view the influence of Shane Warne is evident with a number of Australians having represented the team including Glenn Maxwell, Matthew Wade, and Mitchell Marsh. New Zealand national cricket team player Tim Southee, Pakistan national cricket team star Mohammed Amir and West Indies shorter format giant Keiron Pollard have also played for the London Spirit. The women’s London Spirit team has boasted England opener Tammy Beaumont, all rounder Charlie Dean as well as some big overseas stars such as West Indies Deandra Dottin India’s Deepti Sharma.

Memorable Games For London Spirit 

The men’s London Spirit team had a good season in the 2022 edition of The Hundred finishing third in the group stage before losing to the Manchester Originals . They set the tone in their first group game winning a thrilling London derby against Oval Invincibles at The Oval by just three runs. London Spirit batted first and after useful contributions from Zak Crawley and Dan Lawrence. Skipper Eoin Morgan added real impetus to the innings, getting 47 from 29 balls, clearing the rope on three occasions. This helped the London Spirit to a useful 171 for 6. The reply started perfectly for the London Spirit when The Invincibles lost the dangerous Jason Roy first ball to Nathan Ellis. Early on the home team were floundering on 12 for 4 but the game wasn’t over. Invincibles came back into the match thanks to Jordan Cox and Hilton Cartwright then some excellent late hitting from Tom Curran along with Danny Briggs which almost saw them pull off an unlikely win. West Indies cricket team player Sunil Narine couldn’t manage to hit the six required off the final ball for victory from the bowling of Jordan Thompson who managed to execute an accurate yorker. Ellis claimed player of the match returning an excellent 3 for 28 from his 20 deliveries.

The Oval Invincibles are the main rivals of London Spirit. The London derby between the two teams attracts big crowds in England’s capital city, and whether these games take place at Lords or The Oval, the games always prove to be tense matchups.
