History of Malawi Cricket Team
Previously, Mali was part of the East and Central Africa cricket team, which was a combination of the Uganda cricket team, Malawi cricket team, Zambia cricket team and Tanzania cricket team between 1989 and 2003. The Malawi cricket team became independent associates of the ICC in 2003 and played its first-ever match against the Gambia cricket team back in 2004 the year after.

November 2019 saw the Malawi cricket team play their first official T20I match against the Mozambique cricket team. Malawi fielded first after winning the toss, in which they managed to take 5 wickets as Mozambique racked up 169 runs. 3 of these wickets actually came from Mohammed Patel. Stepping up to the crease, the Malawi cricket team conceded 7 wickets; however, a strong final batting performance from Mohammed Patel again saw him finish the match 40 not out as Malawi won by 3 wickets on home soil.
