One of the founding members of the Big Bash League back in 2011, the Hobart Hurricanes are a franchise team based in the city of Hobart in Tasmania off the southern coast of mainland Australia.

Adorning a bright purple uniform, the Hobart Hurricanes are actually the southernmost team that participates in the Big Bash League. The Hobart Hurricanes are actually the only team hailing from Tasmania too, something which has stood since the team was created.
Where Do Hobart Hurricanes Play?
The Hobart Hurricanes play a majority of their home matches at the Bellerive Oval, with this having a capacity just under 20,000. The ground is over a century old, being opened back in 1914 and has seen a number of different teams call it its home. Even the Australia cricket team has played a number of international matches here.

D’Arcy Short, Ben McDermott, Matthew Wade, Riley Meredith and Nathan Ellis are some of the most notable Hobart Hurricanes players hailing from Australia, with a number of these players also playing for other Big Bash and other franchises in leagues such as the Vitality Blast.
England cricket team stars Jofra Archer and Owais Shah have both taken to the field for the Hobart Hurricanes, with Shoaib Malik of the Pakistan national cricket team and Sri Lanka’s Kumar Sangakkara being some other notable overseas players.
Memorable Games For The Hobart Hurricanes Cricket Team
One of the most memorable games for the Hobart Hurricanes was their first ever Big Bash match against the Perth Scorchers. This took place at the WACA Ground, in which the Hurricanes took to the crease first. They managed to score a respectable 140 which looked a feasible target to beat for the home side. However, fast bowler Ben Hilfenhaus managed to take a number of important wickets as the Hobart Hurricanes defended their score impressively, bowling the Scorchers out for just 109! This was a sure fire way to kickstart their Big Bash League journey.
In the 2017-18 season of the Big Bash League, the Hobart Hurricanes ended the regular season in 4th place, finishing with 5 wins and 5 losses. This saw them progress to the semi finals where they would play the Pether Scorchers, winning by 71 runs as with after putting up 210/4. From here they would progress to the final, facing off against the Adelaide Strikers at their home ground. The home side elected to bat first, putting up 202 runs, conceding just 2 wickets. Despite D’Arcy Short scoring 68 runs from 44 balls, the Hobart Hurricanes’ struggles in the bowling department beforehand proved to be the deciding factor as they lost out by 25 runs. Although they lost the final, it marked significant progress for the side who had lacklustre seasons in prior years.

The two closest sides to the Hobart Hurricanes geographically, those being the Melbourne Stars and Melbourne Renegades, are the teams two biggest rivalries, with both sides having heated matches between one another over the years.
