Northern Superchargers Team Guide

The Northern Superchargers are a men and women’s franchise team that play in The Hundred cricket competition. As its name implies, this English cricket sees each team receive 100 balls each to try and get the highest score possible, making for fast paced and entertaining matches.

Northern Superchargers Background

The Northern Superchargers cricket team was founded in 2019 when the new eight team Hundred competition was announced by the ECB. The team represents Yorkshire and the North East of England. The coaches announced before the initial draft were to be former Australia cricket team player and coach Darren Lehman in charge of the men’s team with ex England player Danielle Hazell in charge of the women’s team. The initially announced captains of the teams were Australian Aaron Finch for the men and ICC Cricket World Cup winner Lauren Winfield-Hill for the women’s team.

Where Do The Northern Superchargers Play?

The team is based in Leeds at the famous Headingley cricket ground. A historic venue that first hosted Test cricket in 1899. Two of the greatest ever Ashes cricket tests took place at the venue; England’s incredible Ian Botham inspired turnaround in 1981, and Ben Stokes memorable heist in 2019.

Northern Superchargers Players

Superchargers marquee signing in the first draft for the men’s team was Durham and England superstar all rounder Ben Stokes. Other big name England players who have featured for the team include Harry Brook, and Adil Rashid who play home games in The Hundred on their county home ground. Big overseas names to play in the superchargers kit are South Africa national cricket team player Wayne Parnell, Australia’s Chris Lynn, Namibia batter David Wiese and Mujeeb Ur Rahman of the Afghanistan national cricket team. 

For the women’s team experienced England cricket team bowlers Jenny Gunn and Kate Cross have featured for the Superchargers in terms of overseas talent names in women’s cricket don’t get much bigger than Australian wicket keeper batter Alyssa Healy.  

Memorable Games For The Northern Superchargers

In the first season of The Hundred back in 2021 The Northern Superchargers became the first team to score 200 against local rivals Manchester Originals at Headingley. Batting first they hit 200 for 5 mainly thanks to a brilliant innings from John Simpson he came in at number 6 with only 35 balls remaining and scored 71 not out from 28 of those striking 11 fours and 2 sixes. Good bowling from David Willey, Ben Raine and Adil Rashid then helped them complete a big 69 run win and claim the derby bragging rights. 

The women’s team also produced an excellent run chase against Manchester Originals in the 2022 edition of The Hundred thanks to one of their overseas stars. Set a challenging looking 161 following a brutal 68 not out from 30 balls including 6 sixes from West Indian Deandra Dottin. In reply South Africa’s Laura Wolvaart played a perfectly paced hand, opening the innings she made an outstanding 90 not out from 49 deliveries as the superchargers won by seven wickets with just one ball to spare.

Rivals Of The Northern Superchargers

The Superchargers’ big rivals are Manchester Originals mirroring the Yorkshire v Lancashire rivalry from county cricket.
