Manchester Originals Team Guide

The Manchester Originals are a franchised men and womens team that play in The Hundred competition in England.

Manchester Originals Background

Manchester Originals was founded in 2019 when the new eight team Hundred competition was announced by the ECB. They featured in the first draft for the competition in October 2019. Australian Simon Katich would be the first coach of the Manchester Originals team, the first captain of the men’s team was to be England cricket team and Lancashire star Jos Buttler, England spinner Sophie Ecclestone would lead the women’s side. The men’s team have finished runners up on two occasions.

Where Do Manchester Originals Play?

The Manchester Originals are based in the city of Manchester and they play at the home of Lancashire County Club, Old Tafford. The ground has been used for Cricket since 1857, with it hosting its first test match all the way back in 1884. 

Manchester Originals Players

The men’s Manchester Originals star player is white ball giant Jos Buttler. He captains the team as well as leading England in ODI and T20 cricket. He is a World Champion in both formats. Other England players who have also featured for the team include Phil Salt, Stephen Finn and Matt Parkinson. A number of overseas stars have also worn the shirt such as West Indies cricket team player Andre Russell, New Zealand national cricket team player Lockie Ferguson, Colin Munroe, and Carlos Braithwaite. The women’s team have also fielded some huge players from the World game such as Lizelle Lee, Harmanpreet Krau, Amy Satterhwaite and Deandre Dottin. As well as skipper Sophie Ecclestone other England players such as Kate Cross and Alex Hartley have played for the Manchester Originals outfit.

Memorable Games For The Manchester Originals 

In the 2022 edition of the Hundred the men’s Manchester Originals batters piled on a record breaking highest score at local rivals Northern SuperChargers. They scored an incredible 208 for 5 in their 100 balls, all of this without star player Jos Buttler. They didn’t miss their talisman as openers Phil Salt and Lawrie Evans got them off to a rapid start. Evans made 45 from just 19 deliveries and was dismissed 42 balls into the innings with 102 already on the board. Number three Tristan Stubbs continued in similar vein hitting five sixes in 46 and Phil Salt top scored with a 25 ball 55. Superchargers made a valiant effort at chasing down the Manchester Originals big score but fell short by 23 runs.

The women’s Manchester Originals team played in the first ever game in the format in July 2021 away against Oval Invincibles. Unfortunately they slipped to a five wicket defeat with two balls remaining. South Africa national cricket team opener Lizelle Lee top scored with 42 and India’s Harmanpreet Krau added 29 the Originals totalled 135 for 6, they then reduced the Invincibles to 36 for 4 from 32 balls but South African duo Dane Van Neikerk (56 not out) and Marizanne Kapp (38) turned the game, England’s Mady Villiers finished the job with 16 not out from just 8 balls.

Rivals Of Manchester Originals

Northern Superchargers are based at their home in Yorkshire, Headingley and are the main rivals of the Manchester Originals. The match between the two sides is seen as a Northern derby in the Hundred and an extension of the rivalry from county cricket.
