In 2011, the Big Bash League was created, with the Brisbane Heat being one of the founding members. This side replaced the Queensland Bulls in the formative Twenty20 Big Bash competition, with the team being recognisable due to their standout teal jerseys.

After picking up 4 wins from 8 games in the 2012-13 edition of the Big Bash League, the Brisbane Heat progressed to the knockout round. First they would face off against the Melbourne Renegades on their home turf, and winning the toss, they would choose to bat first. The Brisbane Heat would go on to score 183 runs, only conceding 3 wickets. This score was primarily thanks to Luke Pomersbach who hit 112 not out from just 70 balls. The Melbourne side, despite having consistent batting performances, were halted thanks to 3 key wickets from Ben Cutting, with them falling short by 15 runs as Brisbane progressed to the final.

In the title match, the Brisbane Heat would play the Perth Scorchers, once again batting first. Conceding 5 wickets from the 20 overs, the side only managed 167 runs, a total which would be inspirational for their opposition. Deposit this though, strong bowling performances from West Indies cricket team bowler Kemar Roach saw him take 3 wickets as the Heat defended their score, winning the match by 34 runs and securing their first ever BBL title.
